Syncsort’s New Products Deliver Focus on an End-to-End Solution to Help Customers Offload Big Data to Hadoop

New Capabilities Help Organizations Access, Analyze and Transform Workloads from Data Warehouses and Legacy Systems for Lower Cost Processing and Facilitating Advanced Analytics on Hadoop

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. – June 03, 2014

Syncsort, a global leader in Big Data software, today announced the delivery of key enhancements to its market leading, high-performance and easy-to-use  DMX-h Hadoop ETL software ─ all geared to support customers growing demand to shift ELT workloads from Enterprise Data Warehouses and legacy systems, including mainframe to Hadoop.
In addition to the new product features, Syncsort is also addressing growing offload demand by supporting the Sqoop Apache Hadoop initiative.
“Many of our customers are looking to free-up Data Warehouse capacity and reduce legacy system costs by offloading expensive data workloads and data to Apache Hadoop,” said Lonne Jaffe, CEO Syncsort. “Our rapid pace of technology innovation continues with the Project SILQ Technology Preview, differentiated Tableau and Vertica integration, and contributions to multiple Hadoop-related open source projects.”

Product Enhancement to Help Understand & Migrate ELT Workloads from the Data Warehouse into Hadoop:
A new and unique Syncsort technology provides an integrated analysis of ELT SQL jobs:
  • Project SILQ Technology Preview – an innovative, first-of-a-kind data warehouse offload technology for analyzing SQL scripts and providing a detailed, graphical visualization of the entire data flow and best practices on how to develop the corresponding DMX-h jobs in Hadoop. A Technology Preview of the web-based technology is now available.
  • Tableau Integration: Syncsort’s Hadoop ETL now allows business users to easily create Tableau data extracts that blend data from a wide variety of sources including data warehouses, mainframe and other legacy systems, facilitating advanced analytics and visualization in Tableau. Available today.

Product Enhancements Facilitating Data Access for Offload to Hadoop

Two new key features to facilitate data access and offload include:
  • HP Vertica Integration:  Syncsort’s Hadoop ETL now saves times and resources by seamlessly partitioning data, loading multiple data streams in parallel into different Vertical nodes, and dynamically regulating load streams and targeted Vertica nodes. Available today, certified for HP Vertica 7.
For more information on HP Vertica integration, read this blog.
  • Secure Mainframe Access – Extends Syncsort’s best-in-class mainframe data access and translation capabilities, adding Connect:Direct support to the out-of-the-box support for Kerberos and LDAP, enabling enterprise-grade security when offloading sensitive data. Available in the upcoming release.
  • Hadoop Development Kit – Syncsort’s Data Transformation Language (DTL) provides a user and application development interface that does not require programming skills, supporting at-your-own pace offload from legacy systems. Hadoop ETL applications can now be created dynamically ─ facilitating dynamic, business driven transformations in an open format, to deploy from virtually any platform to Hadoop. Available today.
Apache Sqoop Initiative

In addition to the product enhancements, Syncsort continues to actively invest in the Apache Hadoop open source community including new open source initiatives that help simplify and accelerate offload, and enhance performance and efficiency of the workloads in HadoopSyncsort’s new initiative extends Sqoop, a framework to move data between relational databases and Hadoop.
Syncsort is open sourcing to the Sqoop project the ability to move multiple Mainframe data sets in parallel to Hadoop and store them in Sqoop supported file formats; the open source also opens the interface to allow anyone to extend the support for more complex mainframe data files. The upcoming release of DMX-h uses this interface, providing a plug-in to move all mainframe data formats, including binary sequential data with COBOL copybook metadata and VSAM to Hadoop.

“In many organizations, large volumes of useful information are locked away in disparate databases across the enterprise, including mainframe,” said Tim Stevens, vice president, Corporate and Business Development, Cloudera. “In combination, Sqoop and Syncsort’s innovations with Sqoop make it easy for them to move all types of mainframe data to Hadoop and take advantage of its advanced analytical capabilities.”

“As Hadoop matures, practitioners are looking to migrate more and more workloads to the open source Big Data framework from data warehouses and other legacy systems. But identifying the best workload candidates for migration and porting them to Hadoop are not trivial exercises, said Jeffrey F. Kelly, senior analyst at Wikibon. Tools such as DMX-h and Project SILQ simplify these tasks, allowing practitioners to significantly shorten Hadoop time-to-value.”
Syncsort is a Gold sponsor at the Hadoop Summit, taking place June 3-5 in San Jose, where it is showcasing its offload solution at Kiosk G2.
