SyncSort for z/OS Features and Benefits

SyncSort for z/OS improves performance by using the 64-bit virtual storage made available through memory objects on zSeries processors. On z9 processors, SyncSort for z/OS further improves CPU time and elapsed time by exploiting the IBM MIDAW and System z9 Integrated Information Processor (zIIP) facilities. SyncSort for z/OS also reduces elapsed time by up to 30% by exploiting parallel access volume (PAV) technology.

SyncSort for z/OS provides unmatched sort performance

SyncSort's proprietary sorting algorithms and optimization techniques automatically reduce consumption of CPU time and improve overall system throughput.

High-performance algorithms use 64-bit virtual storage through memory objects on zSeries processors. Exploitation of z9 processors' MIDAW facility results in lower CPU time and elapsed time. The zIIP facility allows many sorts to have a portion of their processing directed to the zIIP, thereby lowering the traditional CPU time and resource cost associated with sorting. Elapsed time is also reduced by SyncSort's exploitation of PAV technology.

SyncSort's Dynamic Storage Management (DSM) is an advanced proprietary system that monitors and dynamically controls sort performance and resource use. By using a combination of historical tracking and current system monitoring, DSM adjusts resource use for maximum efficiency. DSM optimizes the use of address space and data space and selects available SORTWK devices with the least contention and highest transfer rates. It allocates resources to concurrently running jobs based on a balance among their needs, system load, and the needs of other jobs on the system.

SyncSort for z/OS Dynamic Storage Management

SyncSort's DYNALLOC facility allocates sortwork dynamically. It acquires sortwork as required during the sort job, instead of allocating all anticipated space at sort initiation. In this way, SyncSort prevents sortwork abends without overallocating DASD space. SyncSort also retries if DASD space is unavailable. Incremental sortwork allocation can save up to 25% of overall sortwork space.

For very large sorts which must be performed in a limited amount of disk space, MAXSORT dynamically segments the input data, sorts the segments, stores them on tape, then merges them--all in a single job step. An automatic breakpoint/restart function facilitates restarting after a planned or unplanned interruption.

PARASORT, SyncSort's parallel input technique for large multi-volume tape data sets and concatenated tape data sets, allows SyncSort to read input from two, three, or four tape drives simultaneously. PARASORT can improve elapsed time up to 20% when two volumes are processed in parallel and up to 33% when four volumes are processed.

SyncSort provides a fast copy, plus a high performance replacement for IEBGENER.

Productivity

SyncSort's data utility features include capabilities to join records, retrieve data directly from a DB2 database, and generate multiple, uniquely-formatted output files in a single pass of the input file.

The SortWriter facility efficiently produces reports, which can include headers and trailers, data formatting, totals, record counts, and sections.

With Visual SyncSort, control streams can be developed quickly and easily in a graphical desktop environment.

SyncSort can be invoked through JCL or through COBOL, PL/1, Fortran, or Assembler language programs.

Transparency

When converting from another sort product, it is not necessary to change JCL, control statements, parameter lists, exits, invoking applications, or installed system software, including DB2 and IMS utility sorts. No recompiling or relink-editing of user exits or invoking programs is required.

Technical Support

SyncSort technical support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
