SyncSort VSE's Dynamic Storage Manager (DSM) is an advanced proprietary facility that exploits VSE/ESA enhancements such as data space technology, multiprocessing, and the Turbo Dispatcher. DSM also incorporates three of SyncSort's own innovations for VSE/ESA:
- The virtual library allows SyncSort to keep its program library in virtual memory, thereby avoiding load and program fetch overhead and the use of SVA space.
- Virtual sortwork allows SyncSort to create sortwork files in data space and access data at memory speed rather than the usual slower, DASD speed. Significant reductions in elapsed time and SIOs result.
- The sort manager allows SyncSort to manage sortwork for multiple sorts in data space and to choose the best mix of media for sortwork based on sort characteristics and current system conditions.
SyncSort has two special facilities for managing DASD. The first lets SyncSort automatically obtain secondary space allocation, eliminating DASD space abends while conserving DASD resources. The second, called FastVSAM, allows SyncSort to use its proprietary I/O techniques to improve performance dramatically when sorting native VSAM files.
SyncSort also provides a faster, more efficient copy function for all file types, including VSAM.
SyncSort's data editing and conversion capabilities can generate multiple, uniquely- formatted output files in a single pass of the input file.
The SortWriter facility efficiently produces complete reports, which can include headers and trailers, data formatting, totals, record counts, and sections.
SyncSort can be invoked through JCL or through COBOL, PL/1, or Assembler language programs.
