Convert Mainframe To Unix - Convert Unix To Mainframe - Mainframe To Unix Data Conversion

FilePort, Syncsort's powerful, bi-directional data conversion tool, automatically transforms mainframe data to UNIX format, or UNIX data to mainframe format without destroying data or existing record layouts.

On the surface, the conversion of mainframe data seems simple--merely a translation from EBCDIC to ASCII with ftp or dd or some other UNIX utility. Unfortunately, mainframe data seldom consists of character data alone. It frequently includes packed decimal (COMP-3) and other binary fields, mixed with character. Translating binary fields from EBCDIC to ASCII with utilities like ftp or dd is a sure way of destroying them.

Of course, you could unpack the binary data on the mainframe and translate everything to ASCII. But that takes time and a lot of work, and doesn't give you a usable layout as output. FilePort automates the process of file conversion. With FilePort:

  • You don't have to manually calculate field offsets and lengths
  • You transport 50% less data
  • You don't waste expensive mainframe CPU cycles
  • You avoid learning utilities needed for a mainframe-based conversion
  • You don't have to reformat output that is UNIX-readable but in the wrong layout

You simply give FilePort the flat file plus a record layout (in a COBOL copybook, if you have one). You then tell FilePort whether you want COBOL-compatible or UNIX text output, and FilePort does the rest automatically. FilePort will even process data piped directly from ftp, or read it from a tape created on the mainframe.
