INTRODUCTION

The DMExpress advanced, easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) speeds the development, deployment, and use of tasks and jobs. The overall design of the GUI reduces user keystrokes, eliminates data duplication, and allows for the reuse of objects.

The features and operational flexibility provided by the GUI enable IT administrators to:

  • Respond to rapidly changing application environments or constraints
  • Develop and maintain applications using staff with minimal programming skills
  • Increase productivity by easily building complex applications and quickly completing tasks

VISUAL TASK AND JOB MANAGEMENT

The intuitive Task and Job Editor provides powerful control of application activities, enabling users to:

  • Map job flows
  • Define jobs graphically as a set of tasks that can be linked together to specify a run sequence
  • Use drag-and-drop, point-and-click techniques to build tasks and develop solutions
  • Employ multiple source and target direct flows per task
  • Save task files with job files, create jobs within jobs, and enable global direct flow editing
  • Perform custom task piping
  • Reuse developed objects and tasks
  • Utilize templates and a functions menu with the Expression Builder
  • Monitor server status and perform job reruns
  • Print job flows and tasks
  • Access extensive information in Help
  • Print record dumps in the log with the task settings dialog

JOB CREATION, SCHEDULING, AND SUBMISSION

Unlike other tools, the DMExpress powerful client-server model provides the flexibility to build and test applications on a workstation and later deploy them on a production server. This allows for testing of all applications prior to implementation. DMExpress can also create codes or scripts in C++, C, Visual Basic, and Kornshell so that applications can be easily integrated with third-party tools.

The Job Editor performs task assembly, integration with third-party or user-written applications, script generation, scheduling, execution, and monitoring. It visually represents task flow, allowing on-screen viewing of multiple tasks in a job, the order of tasks, when the tasks were run, and their status.

DMExpress automatically detects common data and links the task with data flow processes. When the task is added to a job, the Job Editor intelligently matches it to the appropriate data flow by automatically associating targets and sources. DMExpress then determines the optimal run sequence for tasks linked by a data flow at execution time.

Additionally, the Scheduler and Calendar allow you to run your jobs either immediately or at another time.

EXPRESSION BUILDER

The DMExpress Expression Builder allows you to define data transformations ranging from the very simple to the very complex. It supports the definition of values and conditions, which are frequently an implementation of business rules. You can use conditions to define a conditional source filter, a target filter, partitions for your target, and complex transformations of a value. The Expression Builder allows you to leverage even more sophisticated data transformation capabilities when you license the Advanced Data Management component. The Expression Builder can be invoked from within various dialogs where expressions are frequently used, such as the Reformat dialog and the Filter dialog.

RECORD MAPPING AND DATA SAMPLING

DMExpress can graphically represent data records. It will read and interpret input files, as well as display record layouts including name, position, and field width. A subset of rows is also displayed for quick graphical examination of record structure.

IMPACT ANALYSIS

The separately licensed Impact Analysis component is a powerful productivity tool. It graphically displays the effect of a global variable change, identifies which input variables contribute to the value of a specific output variable, and provides global find across all jobs.
