Backup Express and NDMP/NAS

Backup Express for NAS using NDMP

NAS and NDMP technology provides low-cost storage options for mission-critical applications, whether on a SAN, iSCSI or direct-attached. Backup Express has significant advantages in NDMP administration; its NDMP management is streamlined, intuitive and complete; and it supports multiple platforms. Backup Express supports all NDMP incrementals.

The Backup Express NDMP software may be installed on UNIX, Linux, or Windows master servers or device servers. It also supports NetApp® SnapMirror®-to-tape. The Backup Express NDMP Interface is not platform specific.

Backup Express supports NDMP on a variety of platforms, including EMC, NetApp, Network Storage Solutions and others.

For specific compatibility information see the interactive Backup Express Supported Technologies Database.

Technical capabilities
  • High-speed Local Backup.
Back up the NDMP storage device directly to SCSI- or Fibre Channel-attached tape drives or robotic tape libraries.

  • Three-Way Backup.
Back up the NDMP storage device through the LAN to a tape device attached to a second filer.

  • Filer-to-Server Backup.
Back up the NDMP storage device to tape devices connected to a server. Especially efficient when most of your data is on the server, this option allows you to utilize the latest tape technologies and leverage your library investment. BEX Advanced Recovery also performs NetApp filer-to-filer SnapVault backups.

  • Server-to-Filer Backup.
Back up data on the server over the network to tape devices attached to an NDMP storage device. This is efficient when most of your data is on the device. The raw (physical) backup option exploits snapshot image technology and reduces backup size by backing up only allocated blocks.
  • File History.
Immediately display the different versions of a file contained in the catalog to allow you to select the most useful one to restore.
  • Multi-Host Tape Libraries.
Multiple hosts (UNIX, Linux, Windows NT/2000/XP, NetWare/OES and NAS filers) can be directly connected to individual SCSI devices in a single, multi-drive tape library. All hosts can stream their data simultaneously to the library.
  • Direct Access Recovery.
Speeds NDMP restores by directly accessing the file to be restored on the correct tape without having to load and stream through each tape in the backup set. Backup Express lets you immediately drill down to the file level and displays all backed up versions and their dates, allowing you to select precisely the file to be restored. Backup Express records the exact tape and the file location on that tape for each file backed up.
