IT departments are responsible for ensuring that business-critical applications are available to users while meeting the shortest recovery time objective (RTO) and providing recovery to near-term and longer points-in time (RPO). Traditional solutions may include serious drawbacks: Tape-based backups and restores are cumbersome and demand ongoing investments in media. Real-time data replication, or mirroring, of primary servers is cost-prohibitive for many of your applications, and may fail to address the need to recover to past points in time. The Backup Express Instant Availability solution addresses all of these issues and more.
Instant Availability exploits iSCSI target-attach technology for near-immediate access to Syncsort virtual volume images, including Exchange, SQL Server, and Oracle. Application continuance, including mailboxes and tables, is established without data transfer.
Once Instant Availability is activated, virtual volume images appear as local, fully accessible (read/write) drives. The stored virtual volume image is transparently available to users, who can continue to work while Syncsort recovery runs in parallel. For quick recovery of individual files, users can easily copy from an Instant Availability drive to another drive on the local node.
- Syncsort Backup Express displays Exchange, SQL Server, and Oracle as recognizable, selectable volumes in the management interface. Experienced administrators can use Instant Availability in conjunction with database administrative procedures to provide point-in-time recovery without significant application downtime.
- Instant Availability is also useful in development testing. Simply map the testing node to a backup copy of production data then test the new application code against the read-only data.
- Oracle databases, no matter how large, can be cloned in minutes with Instant Availability. This is critical to enterprises where duplication of large Oracle databases is frequently required. No additional storage is needed.

Instant Availability (IA): Rapid Application Access Without Data Transfer
Instant Availability ensures that business continues nearly uninterrupted after a server failure. In as little as 60 seconds, users can temporarily resume business operations from a chosen recovery point, with live access to files, databases, and other applications.
Instant Availability protects Windows and SPARC Solaris systems.
