Snapshots are used in multiple ways to facilitate different levels of recovery. By storing smart, NSB allows users to return critical applications to product far more quickly than traditional backup solutions.
Instant Virtualization™ and Full Virtualization enable you to create a virtual machine in ESX/ESXi from any Windows or Linux physical or virtual server backup. VM creation is automated with no need to use the VMware console. Full virtualization creates a virtual machine that contains a complete copy of the source data in a new VMDK file. Instant Virtualization maps to the source data, reducing recovery time to minutes by eliminating data transfer. Recovery is available for both agent-based and agentless VM backups.
Eliminates the need for time-consuming data transfer and provides immediate access to any backup image, including Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint and Oracle volumes. With only a few mouse clicks, any backup can appear as a local, fully accessible (read/write) drive that can be used to restore systems within minutes.

NetApp Syncsort Integrated Backup provides a searchable catalog for all snapshot backups. This provides a means to quickly locate specific files to restore based on file name (with wildcards), file size, date range, etc. Files can be restored back to the original destination or to a different destination.
Backup snapshots can be replicated across sites using NetApp SnapMirror replication technology (included). Operators can access storage at the remote site to provide all recovery features and complete access to backup data.
By storing backups as snapshots and leveraging NetApp clone technology, users can easily access data for reasons other than recovery. For example, database volumes can be rapidly mapped to a
server for testing or development purposes. Copies of entire systems can be started as virtual machines in minutes to offload reporting or data mining operations, thereby removing impact from production systems.
